Dave Potocki Or Lee Van Eepoel STATLER GRADUATION:
Statler's 28th Class and STEP's 3rd Class Graduated November 13, 2008 A total of 15 Statler students received Certificates of Completion at a ceremony celebrating everyone's hard work. Students came from Western New York, Vermont, Conneticut, Florida, and Texas for this class. Ten weeks of learning about all aspects of hospitality, tourism and guest services, with math, writing, public speaking, computer training, and 3 weeks of externships at hotels in the Buffalo area, culminated in a wonderful event. Student's friends and families, externship hosts (Marriott, Adams Mark, Millennium, Holiday Inn, Indigo, Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Veterans Administration Medical Center), and benefactors honored by Olmsted and Statler joined us in the celebration. The students of the third Statler Training and Employment Program for Telephone Banking Call Center were included. FREEDOM SCIENTIFIC'S ADAPTIVE TECHNOLOGY PRESENTATION: On November 11, 2008 Scott Hegle of Freedom Scientific, Inc. visited the Olmsted Center to conduct an Adaptive Technology In-service session for the staff. The event was attended by staff members of several departments within the agency. Several students attending the Statler Center's program and the Statler Training and Employment Program were also present. Scott provided those attending with an overview of JAWS, or Job Access with Speech -- a screen reading software, while highlighting the differences between the latest version and its predecessors. MAGic, a screen magnification software, as well as OpenBook, which allows users to read written material were also discussed in depth. During the presentation, Scott was kind enough to allow several students to examine some of the hardware he had brought along with him, including a PacMate note taker and Braille display. After the conclusion of the presentation, Scott joined several students for an informal lunch held in the atrium at the Olmsted Center, answering questions regarding Freedom Scientific's products and asking questions regarding the experiences of the Statler Center and STEP students. VISION AWARD:The National Statler Center for Careers in Hospitality Service is happy to announce that Herb Siegel and Dennis Kahn are the first recipients of the Statler Vision Award. The Statler Vision Award Vision means more than just sight. Everyone associated with the National Statler Center for Careers in Hospitality Service understands this more than most. The Vision Award not only recognizes an individual’s caring dedication, but also their forward thinking as well. In addition, it gratefully acknowledges their willingness to share their knowledge, enthusiasm and resources all of which allow for life-changing opportunities for the blind, visually impaired and otherwise disabled. In July 2007, Herb Siegel pledged $100,000 from the Herb Siegel Foundation, to the National Statler Center for Careers in Hospitality Service. This generous grant will be used to provide cutting edge computer equipment and software to all Statler Center students. A current Statler Center student recently said “technology is one of my strongest links to the outside world; it literally removes the barriers that would have kept me socially and professional behind, and allows me to live to my fullest in a sighted world.” The Statler Center lab will be renamed, in honor of Herb Siegel, and Siegel Kelleher and Kahn in late spring 2008. ABOUT THE STATLER CENTER'S TRAINING PROGRAMAs a result of enrolling in Statler Center, students get a top-notch education in all things travel/tourism. One of the means we utilize to help ensure students are getting expert, up-to-date instruction is to recruit guest lecturers that are very familiar with the hospitality industry. For example, we bring in hospitality-specific professors from both Niagara University in Niagara Falls, New York and Buffalo State College in Buffalo to work with our students. These individuals help provide classroom-based instruction that gets students up to speed on industry standards, procedures and practices. We also recruit guest lecturers that work in the hospitality industry on a daily basis, as these individuals pass on practical, real-life knowledge and experiences to our students. Guest lectures from the AAA of Western and Central New York, Adam’s Mark Hotel, Holiday Inn, Buffalo Hotel Supply, Buffalo/Niagara Marriott and Gray Line Tours are just some of the people you’ll meet and learn from here at Statler Center, and that’s just in the first week alone!
